 What? The ITS Trail Committee will be sponsoring a Bike Safety Clinic (bike checkup, helmet giveaway, safety education, and much more!). Come to participate in sessions about riding safely on Illinois roads and how and why helmet wearing is important. Personnel from several community organizations will be on hand to talk to kids about safe bike riding and injury prevention. When? Saturday, August 29, 2009. The activities will start at 10:00 AM and go until 12:00 PM. Where? The South Water Tower Park in Staunton -- corner of Sixth and Union streets in Staunton, IL Who? Any child in the 1st through 8th grades in the Southern Macoupin, Northern Madison, and Western Montgomery county areas near Staunton, Illinois. Why? It will be lots of fun! Plus the first 100 participants who complete the program will be given a free bike helmet, water bottle, toothbrush, and other goodies. A new boys bike and new girls bike will also be given away. Lunch will be provided after the event.
Other Events That Day 
Route 66 Ride: Staunton will also be one of many locations along the route from Granite City to Chicago celebrating Route 66 as a welcoming route to bicyclists from Aug. 29 to Sept. 3. The ride will start at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in Granite City, Illinois north of St. Louis and will end near the Art Institute in downtown Chicago. Overnight stops will be in Carlinville, Springfield, Bloomington, Dwight and Joliet. Delta Trike Train: An adhoc group of recumbent trike cyclists known as S.I.R.T.A., for Southern Illinois Recumbent Trike Associates, will be inviting all Delta Trike owners, who have a coupler/hitch, to set a U.S. Record of the most trikes coupled in tandem. This event starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Duda Park/ITS Trailhead. ' The first record will be to connect as many EZ-3 Recumbent Trikes in a train as possible to set a World Record in this class. In addition, S.I.R.T.A., is inviting all owners of Greenspeed, Hase, Rans, and any other delta trikes, who have a “Coupler”, to join them in a separate train. The second record will be connecting both Trains together to set a U.S. Record for the longest Delta Trike Train.
